7 months after her father's death, Asmita wins India's first CWG judo gold
Asmita Dey, 23, from a small village in Tripura, won India's first Commonwealth Games judo gold medal in the women's 48kg final at CWG 2026.
She defeated Canada's Heidi Quach by landing a decisive yuko in the Golden Score period after conceding an early yuko and a penalty.
The victory came seven months after her father's death on 15 December; he had supported her through injury and encouraged her to pursue her dreams.
Dey credited support from SAI Bhopal for her continued progress, following her father's advice to go there after his passing.
