From INR 200-a-day labourer to CWG silver medallist: Rishikanta Singh's incredible rise

Rishikanta Singh won a silver medal in the men's 60kg weightlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, lifting a combined 264kg.

His 121kg snatch set a new Commonwealth Games record, but he failed at 148kg and 151kg in the clean and jerk, allowing Malaysia's Mohammad Aniq Kasdan to take gold.

The medal is India's second of the Games and the first-ever Commonwealth Games medal won by a male weightlifter from Manipur.

Singh once worked as a daily wage labourer and roadside diner helper for nearly a year after believing his weightlifting dream was over.

He previously won the national youth title in 2016 and a bronze at the Junior Commonwealth Championships in Malaysia in 2017.
