After Moshi tragedy, PCMC plans shift to decentralised waste management
Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) plans to shift to a decentralised garbage processing model after the Moshi garbage depot tragedy killed nine staff.
Municipal commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi said concentrating waste at a single location is no longer practical due to rapid population growth.
The Moshi depot receives over 1,500 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste daily and has been operational since 1991.
A proposed waste management facility at Punawale was scrapped in December 2023 due to opposition from residents after 15 years of stalling.
PCMC is identifying temporary locations for storing daily waste as Moshi depot operations were disrupted after the accident.
