Bangladesh president quits citing deteriorating health
Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on July 25, 2026, citing deteriorating health.
His resignation came less than three years into his five-year term, which was due to end in April 2028.
Shahabuddin cited heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, kidney complications, and autonomic neuropathy as reasons for his inability to perform constitutional duties.
His exit occurred amid pressure on the BNP government from the Jamaat-e-Islami-led opposition to remove figures appointed during the previous Awami League administration.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assumed presidential responsibilities following the resignation.
