Bangladesh president likely to resign soon, sources claim

Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin is likely to resign soon, nearly two years ahead of his tenure.
Shahabuddin is the only constitutional officeholder remaining from before the July-August 2024 protests that toppled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Reports suggest Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's government is uncomfortable with Shahabuddin, partly due to his alleged recent contact with Hasina.
Hasina, who fled to India in August 2024, plans to return to Bangladesh in December 2025 and faces a death sentence from the International Crimes Tribunal.
If Shahabuddin resigns, parliamentary Speaker Hafizuddin Ahmed will serve as interim president.
