Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on July 24, 2026, citing health issues.
Shahabuddin, a former ally of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was the only constitutional figure from before the anti-Hasina uprising still in office.
His resignation letter was sent to parliamentary Speaker Hafizuddin Ahmed, who will serve as Acting President until a successor is elected.
Shahabuddin assumed office in April 2023 for a five-year term but stepped down nearly two years early.
The resignation comes amid reports that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's government was uncomfortable with the largely ceremonial presidential role.
