DMK moves SC seeking immediate release of Cauvery water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) moved the Supreme Court seeking immediate release of Cauvery water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu.

The plea asks Karnataka to follow the CWMA's July 30, 2026 directive to release 3,500 cusecs of water per day for 15 days at Biligundlu and clear a 9.46 TMC backlog.

The DMK also asked the court to direct the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to monitor daily reservoir releases and compliance.

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar appealed to protesting groups to withdraw their agitation against the water release.

Protesters, including farmer groups and pro-Kannada organizations, argued that Karnataka lacks sufficient water even for drinking amid the monsoon season.
