CM defends Mekedatu as Centre seeks revisions
Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar defended the proposed Mekedatu reservoir after the Centre returned its detailed project report for revisions.
Shivakumar said the reservoir will be used only for generating 400 MW of electricity and for drinking water, not for irrigation.
The Centre's position was conveyed by Raj Bhushan Chaudhary, minister of state for Jal Shakti, in a Lok Sabha reply on Wednesday.
The detailed project report submitted by Karnataka in 2019 was returned for compliance with the Cauvery water disputes tribunal award and central water commission guidelines.
Shivakumar rejected reports of rejection, saying the Centre sought clarification, and Karnataka will provide clarifications shortly.
