Sarnath joins Unesco World Heritage list

Sarnath, an ancient Buddhist site in Uttar Pradesh, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming India's 45th site.

The UNESCO tag covers the Chaukhandi Stupa and archaeological remains of Sarnath, including Dhamek Stupa, Dharmarajika Stupa, and the Ashokan Pillar.

Sarnath was included in the tentative list in 1998, and the proposal was sent for consideration in January 2025; the decision was made at the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in South Korea.

India ranks sixth globally and second in the Asia Pacific Region for most World Heritage Sites.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the inscription as a proud moment for every Indian.
