Mumbai: BMC Chief Ashwini Bhide Orders Special Drive To Clear Footpath Encroachments, Illegal Hawkers And

BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide ordered a special drive to clear footpath encroachments, illegal hawkers, and non-compliant access ramps near schools, hospitals, railway/metro stations, bus depots, and markets.

The drive aims to make footpaths safe, accessible, and fully walkable for pedestrians, as nearly 50% of Mumbaikars walk daily.

Bhide also directed action against unauthorised constructions, citing a Bombay High Court ruling that documents like property tax receipts do not legalise such structures.

The BMC's Rs 100-crore pedestrian infrastructure upgrade, announced in November 2025, covers 14 roads spanning 16.55 km.

Between June 10 and July 30, 2026, the BMC resolved 96% of pothole complaints via the 'Marg' app.
