Broad Peak Avalanche kills Nirmal Purja and team

Nirmal Purja, 43, and nine other climbers were killed in an avalanche on Broad Peak on July 30, 2026.

Purja, a Nepal-born former British Gurkha and Special Boat Service soldier, had climbed all 14 8-thousanders in 6 months and 6 days.

A haunting image and footage captured by Karakoram Vision show the team moments before the avalanche struck at around 6,600 meters.

Tracking devices showed sudden drops in altitude after the avalanche, indicating the climbers were swept down the mountain.

Rescue efforts were hampered by strong winds, unstable snow, and avalanche risk, with drones and helicopters used in the search.
