8th Pay Commission mulls 2.0 fitment factor, doubling basic pay

The 8th Pay Commission's fitment factor may be set at 2.0, potentially doubling basic pay for government employees from ₹18,000 to ₹36,000.
The 7th Pay Commission had a 2.57 fitment factor but only a 14.29% total salary hike; the 6th had 1.86 with a 54% increase.
If the fitment factor is between 2.0 and 2.57, total salary could rise by 31% to 58%.
HRA (House Rent Allowance) and pensions are also expected to increase under the 8th Pay Commission.
The commission was to be effective from January 1, 2026, but no formal announcement has been made yet.
