Why in news
Sarnath, the ancient Buddhist site in Uttar Pradesh, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 26, 2026, becoming India's 45th World Heritage Site. The decision was taken at the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in South Korea.
Background
Sarnath is where Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment. It was included in UNESCO's tentative list in 1998, and the proposal was sent for consideration in January 2025.
