Cauvery crisis sparks farmers’ protest in TN

Farmers from Cauvery delta districts Thanjavur and Nagapattinam protested demanding compensation over poor rainfall and Karnataka's alleged water release failure.

Members of Desiya Thennindhiya Nathigal Innaipu Vivasayigal Sangam, led by P Ayyakannu, buried themselves in sand near Cauvery river in Tiruchirappalli.

Ayyakannu claimed Karnataka released 25,000 cusecs from Kabini Dam due to floods in Kerala, but refused to release even 3,500 cusecs to Tamil Nadu despite Supreme Court orders.

DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin led protest in Thanjavur, accusing TVK chief minister C Joseph Vijay of negligence and demanding loan waivers and drought declaration.

Protesters demanded ₹ 1 crore compensation from Karnataka government and intervention from chief minister C Joseph Vijay.
