2020 Delhi riots: HC seeks police's stand on Umar Khalid's bail plea in UAPA case

The Delhi High Court issued a notice to Delhi Police seeking its response within two weeks on Umar Khalid's bail plea in a UAPA case related to the 2020 Delhi riots.

Khalid's third bail application, including interim bail, will be heard by a bench of Justices Prathiba M Singh and Vikas Mahajan on August 27, along with co-accused Sharjeel Imam's bail plea.

Khalid, arrested in September 2020, is booked under the Unlawful Activities Act for allegedly masterminding the February 2020 riots that killed 53 people and injured over 700.

The trial court rejected Khalid's bail on July 4, citing the Supreme Court's January 5 order that denied him bail but granted it to co-accused Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohammad Saleem Khan, and Shadab Ahmad.

The Supreme Court had noted a prima facie case against Khalid and Imam under UAPA, citing a hierarchy of participation, leading to the current High Court proceedings.
