‘Place of democracy’: Hitler’s birthplace converted into police station in Austria

Adolf Hitler's birthplace in Braunau am Inn, Austria, has been converted into a police station.

The 17th-century building was renovated to serve a public role and prevent neo-Nazi pilgrimages.

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner stated the building will become a place of democracy, rule of law, security, freedom, and human dignity.

The Austrian government seized the property from owner Gerlinde Pommer in 2016, paying €812,000 in compensation.

A memorial stone outside reads: 'Never again Fascism; In memory of millions of dead.'
