‘Indus Waters Treaty can’t exist in present form’: India declares water-sharing terms outdated, flags Pak’s terror support

India declared the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) cannot continue in its current form, citing outdated terms from the 1950s changed by climate and demographics.

The Narendra Modi government flagged Pakistan's support for terrorism as a key reason for the treaty's renegotiation.

India placed the IWT in abeyance in April 2025 after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, for which Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) claimed responsibility.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that water and blood cannot flow together across the border.
