From selling vegetables to e-rickshaw driver: Bihar's Jhand is now India's first CWG 2026 medallist
Jhandu Kumar won bronze in the men's heavyweight para powerlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, India's first para powerlifting medal of the Games.
A former e-rickshaw driver and vegetable seller from Bihar's Nalanda district, he was affected by polio at age five and overcame severe financial hardship.
He lifted 190kg to reach the podium, saying, "I feel as if I'm flying."
He sold his e-rickshaw in 2023 to compete in the National Para Powerlifting Championships, and later gained support from coach Raj and programs like TOPS and SAI.
Jhandu's daily routine included traveling 20km to buy vegetables, selling them, then training at the gym every afternoon.
