Nishikant seeks Zuckerberg’s apology over PM reel removal
Nishikant Dubey, chairperson of Parliament's Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, demanded that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologize for the temporary removal of PM Narendra Modi's Facebook Reel.
Dubey warned that Meta could lose the 'safe harbour' protection under Section 79 of the Information Technology (IT) Act if no apology is given.
The committee meeting, held with Meta, Google, YouTube, X, Snapchat, MeitY, and MHA officials, addressed the removal of Modi's reel from 12:30 am to 5 am.
The reel, posted on July 23, acknowledged student concerns over NEET-UG paper leak and announced measures including a proposed law for fast-track courts and stricter punishment.
Section 79 grants immunity to intermediaries for third-party content if they follow due diligence and lawful directions.
