NGT constitutes joint committee to probe Moshi tragedy that claimed 9 lives

The NGT western zone bench constituted a three-member joint committee to probe the July 8 collapse of a legacy waste mound at the Moshi Waste-to-Energy project in Pimpri-Chinchwad that killed nine people.

The committee includes one representative each from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, Central Pollution Control Board, and the district collector; MPCB is the nodal agency.

The tribunal admitted an original application filed by Advocate Sudarshan Kelgane and six others against Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and four other respondents.

The committee must inspect the site and submit a factual and action taken report within one month; the next hearing is on August 13.

The application alleges lapses violating the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and Solid Waste Management Rules, posing a threat to human life, public health, and the environment.
