India’s first hydrogen-powered train saves 3,200 litres of diesel; Delhi route tests next

India’s first hydrogen-powered train has completed over 1,200 km of trial runs between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, saving over 3,200 litres of diesel.

The train generates electricity onboard via hydrogen fuel cells, emitting only water vapor and no carbon emissions.

Developed indigenously by Indian Railways, the train consists of 10 passenger coaches and two Hydrogen Driving Power Cars producing 2,400 kW.

A dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has been set up at Jind, storing up to 3,000 kg of green hydrogen at 500 bar pressure.

Next-phase trials are planned for the Delhi route to further support zero-emission rail transport.
