Why in news
India's first hydrogen train was flagged off on July 17, 2026, on the Jind-Sonipat section in the Delhi region. It has completed over 1,200 km, saving more than 3,200 litres of diesel, showcasing a major step towards zero-emission rail transport.
Background
Indian Railways has been exploring alternative fuels to reduce carbon emissions. Hydrogen fuel cell technology is seen as a clean alternative to diesel, with only water vapour as emission. This project is a fully indigenous initiative led by Indian Railways.
