Who is Soman Rana? Army boxer who survived a mine blast before becoming India's Commonwealth shot put gold medallist

Soman Rana won the men's F57 shot put gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a throw of 13.40 metres.

Rana lost his right leg in a landmine blast on December 1, 2006, while serving with the 2nd Battalion of the 8 Gorkha Rifles in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

He previously competed as a national-level middleweight boxer for about five years before his injury.

In 2017, after learning about the Army Paralympic Node at the Bombay Engineering Group and Centre in Kirkee, he began training in seated shot put at age 34.

Compatriot Shubham Juyal won silver with a throw of 13.28m, completing an Indian one-two in the event.
