'Bunked college to watch Jana Nayagan': Family friend's bid to 'discipline' Bengaluru teen ends in stabbing

A 30-year-old family friend, Afsar, allegedly stabbed a 17-year-old college student in the neck in Bengaluru after confronting her for skipping college to watch the movie 'Jana Nayagan'.

The incident occurred on July 28, 2026, when Afsar confronted the girl outside her house around 10pm; she was rushed to a hospital and later discharged.

Afsar, a grocery shop owner, had been named the girl's guardian in college admission records and had known the family for nearly three decades.

Police registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 118 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) and the Juvenile Justice Act; Afsar was detained but not arrested at the family's request.

The college had informed the girl's father and Afsar after she bunked classes on July 25 to watch the film with friends.
