‘Pakistan eroded faith’: India envoy to US calls out Islamabad's ‘distraction policy’ over Indus Waters Treaty

India's Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra, defended India's decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in abeyance, saying Pakistan had eroded the treaty's spirit over decades.

In a Newsweek opinion piece, Kwatra accused Pakistan of using a 'distraction policy' to divert attention from its internal problems, citing a threat of war from a former foreign minister at a conference in Islamabad.

Kwatra noted the 1960 IWT allocated India about 20% of the Indus basin's waters and Pakistan about 80%, but India honored the agreement despite the imbalance.

Kwatra said Pakistan blocked India's attempts to modernize or renegotiate the IWT to reflect technological changes and allow greater hydropower development, eroding India's faith.
