Labour codes to ensure social security for millions of gig workers in India, says Mandaviya
Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told Rajya Sabha that the government will ensure gig workers in India have access to social security schemes through the Labour Codes.
The Labour Codes legally recognise gig workers, defining them as persons earning outside a traditional employer-employee relationship.
Provisions in the Labour Codes include appointment letters, safeguards on termination and retrenchment, fixed-term employment, negotiating councils, minimum wages, social security, and occupational safety.
According to a Niti Aayog report, there are about 80 lakh gig workers in India, of whom close to 10 lakh are registered on the e-Shram portal.
