KGMU bans non-veg in hostel messes after governor flags hygiene lapses

KGMU banned cooking and serving non-vegetarian food in all 21 hostel messes after governor Anandiben Patel flagged hygiene lapses during the 22nd convocation.
The restriction applies only to university-run hostel messes and cooperative kitchens; students may still consume or prepare non-veg food privately.
Inspections by Jan Bhavan teams found non-veg being cooked in three messes and expired spices in two others, prompting the ban.
The decision follows the UP government's One District-One Cuisine scheme, which assigned only vegetarian dishes to all 75 districts.
Some faculty criticized the ban, noting KGMU attracts students with diverse dietary preferences from across the country.
