Several dead in Brussels construction site fire, say authorities

A fire at a construction site on Place de Brouckere in central Brussels killed several people.

Rescue teams searched for six missing workers after the blaze erupted at a renovation project with over 200 workers present.

Three people were taken to hospital, and bodies were discovered inside one of the site's two elevator shafts.

Spokesman Brecht Speybrouck said six workers were unaccounted for and the cause of the fire was not yet known.

Flames spread through elevator shafts, triggering a second fire in an underground section and complicating rescue efforts.
