LG approves 23 heritage sites in Ladakh as ‘protected monuments’

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena approved declaring 23 heritage sites in Ladakh as 'protected monuments'.

The declaration was made under the Jammu and Kashmir Ancient Monuments Preservation Act.

The sites include petroglyph sites, rock carvings, caves, Gompas, forts, and palaces, many in dilapidated condition.

Examples include the Petroglyph Site at Sharnos and the Maitreya Buddha Rock Carving at Shey.

The move aims to ensure scientific conservation, documentation, and sustainable management of the sites.
