23 heritage sites in Ladakh declared protected monuments

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena declared 23 heritage sites as protected monuments under the Jammu and Kashmir Ancient Monuments Preservation Act.

The protected sites include Petroglyph Sharnos, Maitreya Buddha rock carving at Shey near Sindhu Ghat, Tingmosgang fort, Ancient Caves at Saspol, Sumoor fort in Leh district, and rock inscriptions at Yourbaltak in Kargil district.

The protected monument tag allows the UT administration to undertake conservation measures, prevent encroachments, and regulate activities that may endanger structural integrity.

Saxena stated the initiative reflects a commitment to preserving Ladakh's heritage while promoting responsible cultural tourism, research, and public awareness.
