Top FIFA adviser quits over World Cup plan
Carlos Cordeiro, senior adviser to FIFA president Gianni Infantino since 2021, resigned in protest over FIFA's proposal to sell a minority stake in the commercial rights to its competitions, calling it 'a bad deal for football'.
Cordeiro stated FIFA has no financial need for outside investment, citing billions in reserves, no debt, and projected $15 billion in revenue from 2022 to 2026; he questioned why it would sell part of its most valuable asset for about $4.2 billion.
His resignation follows public opposition from UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), adding to resistance ahead of a crucial member vote.
