Nepal submits proposal to India for using ‘National Identity Card’ for travel verification
Nepal's Department of Immigration formally requested India to accept the National Identity Card (NID) as a valid travel document for Nepali citizens entering India.
If approved, the NID would become the third document allowed for travel, alongside the existing citizenship certificate and passport.
The proposal was submitted via diplomatic channels, and Nepal's immigration department spokesperson Tika Ram Dhakal confirmed they await a formal response from India.
Currently, Nepali citizens must carry a citizenship certificate or passport; the NID would add a third option if India agrees.
The NID was launched in 2018 to modernize public administration and is already mandatory for government and banking services in Nepal.
