5 dead, 28 still missing, search underway after ferry catches fire in Indonesia's Madura island

The KM Mutiara Sentosa ferry, carrying 271 passengers, caught fire off Indonesia's Madura island on Sunday while traveling from Surabaya to Makassar, killing 5 people.

As of Monday, 28 people remain missing, and 238 have been rescued; search operations involve seven boats and one helicopter from police, rescue agency, and Navy.

Rescuers are focusing on an area 10 miles east and west of the incident site; the search will last seven days with a possible 14-day extension.

All rescued victims were evacuated to the Port of Gapura Surya Nusantara in Surabaya on Monday morning.

The cause of the fire is still unclear, according to Arman Asmara Syarifuddin, director of marine and air affairs at East Java police.
