More than 1.18 lakh Central employees choose Unified Pension Scheme: FM Sitharaman tells Parliament
,18,195 Central Government employees and retirees opted for the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) as of July 19, 2026, per Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
UPS, notified on January 24, 2025, provides an assured monthly payout after retirement to Central Government employees under the National Pension System (NPS).
Past retirees who superannuated on or before March 31, 2025, with 10 years of regular service, and spouses of eligible deceased retirees, could also opt for UPS.
The government extended benefits of retirement gratuity and death gratuity to UPS-covered employees, and the opt-in cut-off date was extended to November 30, 2025.
UPS was introduced to address employee demands for assured pension while maintaining a fiscally responsible, funded, and contributory framework.
