Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed Parliament that more than 1.18 lakh central government employees and retirees have opted for the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) as of July 19, 2026. This update is significant as it indicates the uptake of the new pension framework introduced in 2025.

Background

The UPS was notified on January 24, 2025, and implemented from April 1, 2025, as an option under the National Pension System (NPS) to provide assured pension to central government employees. It was introduced in response to demands for assured pension under NPS.
