Selector backs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for Indian Test team

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, 16, was named East Zone vice-captain for the Duleep Trophy, ahead of captain Ishan Kishan.

Selector Pravanjan Mullick said the vice-captaincy is meant to mature Sooryavanshi and that he could one day become India captain.

If Sooryavanshi performs well in the Duleep Trophy, Mullick believes he could be in contention for the Indian Test team.

Sooryavanshi previously served as Bihar vice-captain in first-class cricket and India Under-19 vice-captain.

The decision was a collective one by East Zone selectors, made without prior discussion with Sooryavanshi.
