Watch: Wildfires rage across France, Spain as thousands flee, national emergency declared

Wildfires in France's Gironde region forced over 220,000 people from their homes, with 55,000 more ordered to leave as flames pushed toward Bordeaux.

A separate wildfire in France's Landes region displaced 30,000 people earlier in the week, bringing total evacuations to over 250,000.

In Spain, a new wildfire near Valencia forced 15,000 evacuations, with a perimeter of about 21 kilometers, according to regional president Juanfran Perez Llorca.

Around 60,000 people were evacuated from areas around Madrid, with international firefighting assistance from Portugal and Italy.

Spain declared a national emergency as heatwaves across Europe dried vegetation, with Aquitaine temperatures averaging 32.2°C in July, 7.3°C above normal.
