Hashmatullah Shahidi resigns as Afghanistan ODI captain after leading team through historic era

Hashmatullah Shahidi resigned as Afghanistan's ODI captain on July 22, 2026, but will continue playing for the ODI side.

Shahidi was named ODI captain in 2022 and led Afghanistan at the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Shahidi is also Afghanistan's Test captain and became the first Afghan player to score a Test double hundred (200* vs Zimbabwe on March 11, 2021).

The resignation comes months after Richard Pybus was appointed head coach, following Jonathan Trott's decision to step down.

Under Shahidi and Trott, Afghanistan achieved historic ODI wins against England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands at the 2023 World Cup.
