A cyclonic circulation formed over Gangetic West Bengal, extending up to 9.4 km altitude, is triggering thunderstorms in Kolkata and South Bengal.
The Met department issued an orange warning for extremely heavy rain in East Medinipur and West Medinipur on Sunday.
Heavy rain is forecast for Kolkata on Sunday, with scattered thunderstorms on Saturday and Monday.
On Saturday, heavy rain warnings apply to North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Medinipur, West Medinipur, Jhargram, and Bankura.
On Sunday, heavy rain is expected in Bankura, Jhargram, both 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, and Kolkata.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) advised fishermen not to venture into the sea from July 25 to 27 due to very rough sea conditions.
Squally weather with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph is expected along the Odisha coast from July 25 to 27.
An 'orange' alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall was issued for Cuttack, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, and Angul districts.
A 'yellow' warning for heavy rainfall was issued for 16 other districts, including Puri, from Saturday to Sunday morning.
