India, as BRICS Chair for 2026, is hosting the 16th BRICS Health Ministers' Meeting in Chandigarh from July 22-24, 2026. It underscores India's commitment to advancing health cooperation among BRICS nations and the Global South.
Background
India has previously chaired BRICS in 2012, 2016, and 2021. The 2026 chairmanship theme is 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Collaboration and Sustainability'. The health track is a key pillar of India's BRICS agenda.
Key facts
India will host the 16th BRICS Health Ministers' Meeting in Chandigarh from July 22-24, 2026.
The meeting includes a Senior Officials' Meeting (July 22), Health Ministers' Meeting (July 23), and a dialogue on digital health and AI (July 24).
The theme is 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Collaboration and Sustainability'.
Nine priority areas for BRICS health cooperation have been identified: health security, pandemic preparedness, digital health, innovation, access to affordable medicines, traditional and integrative medicine, tuberculosis, healthy lifestyles, mental health, and strong health systems.
All 11 BRICS members will participate: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Indonesia.
These countries represent about half the world's population and nearly 40% of global GDP.
The meeting will adopt a Ministerial Declaration to strengthen BRICS commitment to global health.
Union Health Secretary Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava and Ayush Secretary Shri Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha briefed the media on preparations.
The Health Ministers' Meeting will be chaired by Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda.
