Why in news

India plans to begin trials of domestically developed bullet trains by mid-2027, with commercial services on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor targeted from August 2027. Civil construction on the 97-km Surat-Vapi stretch is scheduled to be completed this year, marking progress on India's first high-speed rail project.

Background

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor is India's first bullet train project, implemented with Japanese collaboration. Initially, Japanese Shinkansen trains were expected, but India has now decided to operate indigenous trainsets with globally interoperable signalling systems.
