India sends medical assistance to Kenya for Ebola preparedness

Why in news
India handed over the first tranche of medical assistance (4.5 tonnes) to Kenya on July 23, 2026, to strengthen its long-term preparedness for Ebola and other infectious diseases. This follows India's earlier supply of over 45 tonnes of medical supplies to the Africa CDC in May-June 2026.
Background
India has been a first responder in Kenya during public health challenges, including supplying 1.12 million COVID-19 vaccine doses under Vaccine Maitri. The health partnership also includes grant-based equipment like a Bhabhatron radiotherapy machine and a CT scan machine.
Key facts
First tranche of 4.5 tonnes handed over by Indian High Commissioner Adarsh Swaika to Kenya's cabinet secretary for health Aden Duale at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Includes 279 packages of PPE kits, sample transportation kits, infrared thermometers, face shields, heavy-duty protective boots, and other infection-prevention materials.
Second tranche of medical assistance will be sent soon.
Aims to strengthen Kenya's long-term preparedness and response capacity for Ebola Virus Disease, other infectious diseases, and future pandemic threats.
Supports Kenya National Public Health Institute and frontline institutions in disease surveillance, safe sample collection/transportation, infection prevention, and healthcare personnel protection.
Follows India's supply of over 45 tonnes of medical supplies to Africa CDC in late May and early June 2026 for continental Ebola preparedness.
India previously supplied 1.12 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to Kenya under Vaccine Maitri, plus essential medicines and medical assistance.
India provided a Bhabhatron radiotherapy machine to Kenyatta National Hospital, a CT scan machine to Kenya Navy Hospital, and an MRI machine is under process.
Over 10,000 Kenyans travel to India annually for medical treatment.
