The Bombay High Court has allowed Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to file a civil suit against Meta, X, and Google over AI-generated deepfake videos linking him to financial gains from the E20 ethanol policy. This case highlights growing legal battles over deepfakes and personality rights in India.
Background
Deepfake technology has been increasingly used to create manipulated videos of public figures. The E20 (20% ethanol-blended petrol) policy is a government initiative to promote biofuels, but Gadkari clarified he has no role in it, as it is under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

The case adds to lawsuits in Indian courts over misuse of AI deepfakes and protection of personality rights.
A criminal complaint was earlier filed by BJP’s social media unit in Nagpur against influencers running organized digital campaigns on ethanol blending.
