Karnataka released a record 330.4 tmc of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu in 2025-26 despite an early IMD forecast of below-normal rainfall. This has led to a water crisis in Karnataka and raised questions about the state's water management. The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) rejected Karnataka's plea to defer releases, directing it to continue supplying 3,500 cusecs daily.
Background
The Cauvery water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu is a long-standing inter-state river water conflict. The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) award, modified by the Supreme Court, stipulates annual water sharing. The CWMA and CWRC oversee implementation. In drought years, releases are often reduced, but in 2025-26, Karnataka released far more than the stipulated 177.2 tmc.

Despite the forecast, Karnataka released 2.6 tmc in April (stipulated 2.5 tmc) and 3.1 tmc in May (stipulated 2.5 tmc).
In June 2026, release dropped to 2.1 tmc against stipulated 9.1 tmc; till July 16, only 0.4 tmc released.

CWMA rejected Karnataka's plea to defer releases and directed compliance with CWRC order of 3,500 cusecs daily for 15 days.
Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha criticized the government for not taking legal steps after El Niño warnings.
