The FSSAI has prohibited the addition of rum or whisky flavour to alcoholic beverages, citing consumer deception and misrepresentation. This action follows inspections that found manufacturers using neutral alcohol with added identical flavouring substances. The regulator has banned sale of products from several companies and issued notices to others.
Background
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the statutory body regulating food and beverage standards in India. It has been increasingly vigilant about labelling and product authenticity. The move aligns with global practices where flavoured spirits must be clearly labelled as such.

FSSAI prohibits adding 'rum flavour' to rum or 'whisky flavour' to whisky, as it misrepresents the true nature and misleads consumers.
The characteristic taste and aroma of rum and whisky should develop naturally through base ingredients, fermentation, distillation, and maturation.

FSSAI prohibited sale of products from Mohan Rocky Springwater, United Spirits, INBREW Beverages, and Associated Alcohol & Breweries.
Inspected Mandexi Distilleries & Breweries in Goa and issued notices to six producers in Maharashtra.
FSSAI objected to '7 years old blended' claim on Old Monk XXX Rum variant, as matured rum spirit was less than 5% of the blend.
FSSAI clarified the issue is not representative of the entire industry; many manufacturers comply with standards.
