Why in news

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari informed Parliament that E20 petrol can reduce vehicle mileage by 2-6%, but extensive testing shows no engine failures. This comes amid criticism over fuel economy and compatibility concerns as India pushes ethanol blending.

Background

India's ethanol blending programme started as a pilot in 2001, with E5 introduced in 2006. Blending rose from 1.53% in 2013-14 to higher levels after infrastructure buildup. E15+ has been used for over 3.5 years, E19-E20 for over 2.5 years.
