Government ministries have provided differing estimates on fuel efficiency loss when using E20 petrol in older vehicles. The Road Transport Ministry cited a 2-6% drop, while the Petroleum Ministry indicated 3-5%. This comes amid social media claims of substantial mileage loss, prompting official clarification.
Background
India is promoting E20 fuel (20% ethanol blended petrol) as part of its ethanol blending roadmap to reduce oil imports and emissions. Older vehicles designed for E10 petrol may experience reduced fuel efficiency when using E20.
Key facts
Road Transport Ministry informed Lok Sabha that fuel efficiency of BS-III, BS-IV, and BS-VI vehicles designed for E10 may reduce by 2-6% when using E20 fuel.
The 2-6% estimate is based on a study by ARAI, SIAM, and Indian Oil Corporation.
Petroleum Ministry told Rajya Sabha on July 20 that reduction in fuel economy for older E10-designed vehicles is generally limited to about 3-5%.
Petroleum Ministry noted that E20 petrol offers higher octane rating, superior anti-knock characteristics, cleaner combustion, and smoother engine operation.
Both ministries emphasized that fuel economy depends on driving conditions, habits, and vehicle maintenance.
