Why in news
The government has clarified that no decision has been taken to increase ethanol blending beyond 20% in petrol, while highlighting the safety and performance of E20 fuel. India achieved 20% ethanol blending five years ahead of the original target, and the government is addressing concerns raised in media and social media about E20 fuel.
Background
India's Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme has been implemented in a phased, scientifically validated manner over two decades. The target of 20% blending was originally set for 2030 but was achieved by 2025-26. E20 fuel has been in use for over 2.5 years, and E15+ for over 3.5 years, with millions of vehicles running on these blends.

India achieved 20% ethanol blending in petrol by 2025-26 (Nov-Jun average), five years ahead of the original target.
Average ethanol blending percentages: 2022-23 ~12%, 2023-24 ~14.6%, 2024-25 ~19.2%, 2025-26 (Nov-Jun) 20%.
E85 fuel (85% ethanol, 15% petrol) is introduced only for flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) designed and certified for it, not as a general blend increase.
Over 2 crore two-wheelers and 3 crore petrol cars are running on ethanol-blended fuels without evidence of widespread engine failure.
A major passenger vehicle manufacturer serviced 2.84 crore vehicles in FY 2025-26, including 1.5 crore older non-E20 certified vehicles, with no reports of E20-related engine damage.
No confirmed complaints from vehicle manufacturers, automobile associations, or consumer organizations about mileage drop, pickup issues, or tank corrosion due to E20.
Inter-ministerial committee tests by NITI Aayog, IOCL, ARAI, IIP, and SIAM confirmed E20 does not cause abnormal wear or compatibility issues.
Fuel efficiency depends on multiple factors including driving conditions, habits, and vehicle maintenance, not solely on ethanol content.
Manufacturers continue to honor warranty obligations for vehicles using E20 fuel, indicating its safety and reliability.
The government will take future decisions on higher ethanol blends only after detailed scientific studies and stakeholder consultations.
