'E20 petrol cuts mileage by up to 5% in older vehicles,' govt tells Parliament
E20 petrol may reduce fuel efficiency by 3 to 5% in older vehicles originally designed for E10 fuel, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi told Parliament.
The government stated there is no evidence that E20 petrol causes widespread engine damage or vehicle breakdowns.
E20 petrol offers higher octane levels, improved resistance to engine knocking, better combustion, and smoother acceleration.
More than 20 crore two-wheelers and over 3 crore petrol cars have used E15+, E19, or E20 fuel without verified large-scale engine failures.
Automobile manufacturers continue to honor vehicle warranties when customers use E20-compliant fuel, and laboratory studies found no significant performance differences in older vehicles.
