The government has clarified that no decision has been taken to increase ethanol blending in petrol beyond 20%, addressing concerns over E20 petrol. It also ruled out immediate ethanol blending in diesel and dismissed claims of widespread vehicle damage from E20 as misleading.
Background
India achieved 20% ethanol blending in petrol (E20) in 2025-26, making it the standard petrol variant nationwide. The blending increased gradually from 1.5% in 2013-14 after phased, evidence-based evaluations and consultations with stakeholders.
